Director of Engineering

Engineering Remote Full time

Lead our hardware and software teams and own the full technical stack.

Role overview

As Director of Engineering, you will lead both our hardware and software engineering teams. You will own the full technical stack from PCBA and embedded firmware through cloud infrastructure, mobile applications, and AI-powered analytics. This is a senior leadership role responsible for shaping and executing Woddle's engineering roadmap, scaling our team, and ensuring that every product we ship meets the clinical-grade quality bar our patients and partners depend on. You will report directly to the CTO and work closely with Product, Clinical Affairs, and Operations to build a platform that powers Woddle's three business lines: DTC consumer, clinical RPM, and AI data.

What you'll do

  • Engineering leadership. Lead, mentor, and scale Woddle's hardware and software engineering teams. Build a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and innovation.
  • Hardware and firmware oversight. Direct all phases of PCBA design, hardware development, and firmware engineering, ensuring designs meet quality, cost, and regulatory standards (FDA Class I, relevant IoT and medical device frameworks).
  • Software engineering ownership. Oversee development of Woddle's software platform including embedded systems, mobile apps (iOS/Android), backend services, cloud infrastructure, and the AI/ML data pipeline.
  • Roadmap execution. Partner with the CTO and VP of Product to define and deliver the engineering roadmap, balancing clinical reliability, consumer experience, and scalability.
  • Cross-functional collaboration. Work closely with Clinical Affairs, Product, and Operations to translate requirements into shipped product. Engage directly with health system partners on integration and implementation needs.
  • Operational excellence. Own engineering processes including sprint cadence, QA/QC, code review standards, CI/CD pipelines, and incident response.
  • Vendor and partner management. Manage relationships with contract manufacturers, hardware suppliers, and technology partners.
  • Hiring and team development. Recruit top engineering talent and develop career paths that retain and grow the team.

What we're looking for

  • Full-stack engineering leadership. Proven track record leading both hardware and software engineering teams. You are equally comfortable in a board layout review and a backend architecture discussion.
  • IoT and embedded systems expertise. Deep experience building connected hardware products, from sensor design and embedded firmware through wireless communication (BLE, Wi-Fi) and cloud connectivity.
  • Software engineering depth. Strong background in software engineering including embedded systems, mobile, backend/cloud, and data/ML pipelines. Experience with clinical or health data platforms and electronic health records is a strong plus.
  • Medical and clinical device experience. Familiarity with FDA-regulated or medical device development environments, including design controls, quality systems, and regulatory documentation.
  • Relevant industry background. Experience in infant health, pediatric medtech, consumer health wearables, remote patient monitoring, or related fields is a meaningful asset.
  • Leadership and communication. Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, influence without authority, and communicate technical tradeoffs clearly to executive and clinical stakeholders.
  • Startup mentality. Comfortable making high-quality decisions in a resource-constrained, fast-moving environment. You build for scale without over-engineering for day one.

Skills you'll need

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of engineering experience, with at least 4 years in a leadership role overseeing multidisciplinary teams.
  • Hands-on experience with IoT product development, including hardware bring-up, embedded firmware (C/C++, RTOS), BLE/Wi-Fi connectivity, and cloud integration.
  • Proficiency overseeing software engineering across the full stack: embedded, mobile (iOS/Android), backend (cloud-native, APIs), and data/ML.
  • Experience with PCB design tools and hardware lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with FDA Class I/II device development, quality management systems, or similar regulated environments.
  • Strong project and program management skills across cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with agile development methodologies and modern DevOps practices.

Working conditions

  • Eligible to work in one of the following states: AK, AL, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, HI, ID, IL, IN, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NV, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, or WY.
  • Occasional travel to manufacturing sites, health system partners, or partner locations required.

Compensation

  • $200,000 to $230,000 per year plus equity for full-time roles.
  • Comprehensive benefits including health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, and parental leave.

What you'll get

  • Direct ownership of engineering strategy at a high-growth, venture-backed company.
  • Support for professional development and continuous learning.
