Whether you’re looking for books to add to your baby registry, starting your little one’s first library, or adding new books to your reading routine, finding the right reading material can make all the difference.

Reading anything to your little one helps their development, and high-contrast picture books are the most baby-friendly and an excellent way to introduce them to the world in fun and engaging ways.

Take a look at this list of board books and regular picture books. Did we miss one of your family’s favorites? Reach out to us by email or on social media and let us know!

Never Touch a Porcupine! By Rosie Green and Stuart Lynch | What do we love about this? Interactive books are a great way to introduce reading to your newest family member. This board book has a silicone touch-and-feel element that babies adore and is ideal for sensory play.

Baby University Board Book Set: A Science for Toddlers by Chris Ferrie | Why do we think this set of board books is an amazing addition to any first library? It’s a great way to get little STEM learners an early headstart, the illustrations are bright and colorful, and it’s fun to read for parents and caregivers too.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle | Need we say more? This is a tried and true classic- in board book version- that we read, and that our grandchildren will also read.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown | Originally published in 1947 has been a favorite for generations of babies and parents. We think it’s great for every little library in the making. With the soothing illustrations, this book is great for developing nighttime rituals and for lulling your child to sleep.

Love You Forever by Robert Munsch and Sheila McGraw | This incredibly sentimental story of motherhood and growing up tugs at every parent’s heartstrings. This book is a must for children and adults!

The Truth About Dragons by Julie Leung and  Hanna Cha | Featured on NPR, this book follows one little boy’s quest as he learns- you guessed it- the truth about dragons. The author was inspired by her firstborn, wanting to tell the tale of his two cultures through a vibrant picture book and engaging story. Its illustrations are beautiful and bold, and the story is excellent.

Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins | If there was one word to describe this board book it would be: hilarious. Follow this grumpy bear as he navigates getting mistaken (and taking up the role!) as the mother of these cute little goslings!

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney | This is another fun board book option, great for establishing a nighttime routine with your little one! We love the bright, bold colors and pictures in this book. Its very engaging and an entertaining read for babies and parents alike.

Dog's First Baby: A Board Book by Natalie Nelson | We love this board book! Told from the dog’s perspective, Dog’s First Baby is all about changes and welcoming a new baby into the family. The story is incredibly sweet and playful!

I Wish You Happiness by Michael Wong and Ann Baratashvili | If there was ever a perfect baby gift, this book is it! Multi-award-winning, I Wish You Happiness is full of love. The message about empowering children as they grow is great for children as they develop their sense of self.

Abuelo, the Sea, and Me by Ismée Williams and Tatiana Gardel | The award-winning, heartwarming picture book highlights an intergenerational story between a grandchild and a grandparent. The illustrations are as beautiful as the prose!

Baby Signs by Joy Allen | Even before your baby can speak, they are still communicating! With educators like Ms. Rachel using sign language to aid in early child development, this fun book is the perfect first step to communication!
